Description

This rare pictorial map of the University of Notre Dame was originally illustrated by alumnus Thomas Hickney in 1938, though this somewhat later example lacks the signature on what was presumed to be the earlier edition. Hickney was a student of the architecture program at the illustrious university, and his talents are well-manifested within the numerous vignettes that accurately capture important buildings across campus.

One of the most recent additions, visible in the lower left, is the Knute Rockne Memorial Building, an athletic complex completed in 1937. Other highlights include a sketched view of Notre Dame Stadium (sadly lacking Touchdown Jesus), local amusements on Lakes St. Mary’s and St. Joe, and a decorative cartouche that shows the school’s balanced commitment to athletics and academics.

The piece is quite rare in both institutional collections and on the market. As of July 2025, the map is unlisted in WorldCat and found only in Rumsey (though reprints of this image appear to be available as well).
