Description

“Decorative, Educational and Colorful 18 7/8″ x 26 3/4″ Map of the U.S.A. For Classroom, Family Room or Child’s Room. Easy to Hang.” – Text, tube.

This kitschy map of the United States highlights the country’s best features, at least as perceived by the target audience of Hallmark after World War II. A variety of playful vignettes reflect series American priorities (i.e. industry) and, unfortunately, common historical whitewashing – salmon happily jumping into cans, Native Americans peacefully making pottery, fields of wheat, cotton, and corn that transcend state borders, pretty-light skinned children at play – even uranium mining in Mexico!

Illustrated by John Stewart (signed below the ship off San Diego) and published, probably in the late 1950s or early 60s, by Hallmark Cards, Inc. of Kansas City. This example of the map includes the original cardboard mailing tube.
