Description

As alluded to in the title, this endearing look at West Point was originally drawn by cadet James “Jim” Cumberpatch during World War II, whose original print expressed “any similarity to actual places is hopefully intentional.” The comedy has been dialed back somewhat on this example, issued sometime later in the 1950’s and revised by J.F. Bart, but it still shows a cartoonish depiction of the noble institution.

Elements of humor do persist, as figures are shown riding monuments, chasing girls, and enjoying some leisure time on the water. This includes a ride aboard the Alexander Hamilton, a steamer on the Hudson River Day Line that made regular trips from New York to Albany between 1924 and 1971.

However, redoubts and batteries of cannon also reflect the seriousness of the curriculum, as well as the notable military history of the area.
