Description

Dating back to at least the year 1000 CE, volvelles are moving paper charts that help to facilitate various means of calculation and data visualization, akin to early analog computers. Simplified versions became popular in the 1920s and 1930s as forms of educational amusement for juvenile audiences.

That was likely the intended market for S.G. Bocholt and the Chart of Knowledge Company of Boston, Massachusetts, who created this volvelle of the United States in 1931. Spinning the center disc moves the outer arrow to all 48 states, plus Alaska, Hawaii, and the District of Columbia. Different bits of information like population statistics, principal products, area, and prominent geographic features are displayed for each.
