Description

This wonderfully detailed map of the United States captures the eastern portion of the country in the mid-19th century. With the exception of Minnesota and West Virginia, state borders are almost completely ‘modern’, and an intricate network of railroads, canals, and improved roads are shown connecting the various settlements and towns. Areas further west were considerably less developed, though the recent discovery of gold in California would soon prompt further waves of emigration.

The map was published in Philadelphia by Samuel Augustus Mitchell in 1849. The year following publication, Thomas Cowperthwait would acquire the plates and begin re-issuing the same (or slightly updated) versions under his own name.
