Description
This pair of fascinating woodcut prints were originally published in London in a March 1854 issue of Gleason’s Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion. On display is the pageantry of the Russian Army, in particularly its cavalry corps. At the time, Britain and France were allied with the Ottoman Empire against the Russians to curtail their imperial ambitions and maintain the delicate ‘balance of power’ in Europe. The conflict was among the first major wars to receive extensive press coverage from on-the-spot reporters.
