Description
This eye-catching cartoon features a weary and frustrated Uncle Sam grasping a puny KKK member adorned in their silly robes, mask in hand. Commentary on Americanism correctly notes that true patriots never hide behind a disguise. Signed Glen Cady, lower right, with an additional annotation on the verso noting the origin as Nodaway, Iowa.
Not much can be found on Mr. Cady, though a few salacious news articles and press photos from 1938 Chicago indicate he was a local teacher who was embroiled in nasty legal proceedings with his first wife, Mary. She asked a judge for separate maintainence on grounds of ‘aggressive nudism’ in their home, quoted as saying, “too much is hell.” Cady would go on to remarry in 1944.
