Description

This uncommon illustrated map shows a stylized overview of most of North Carolina between Asheville and the Outer Banks. It was issued as a souvenir to commemorate the 1987 U.S. Olympic Festival, America’s largest amateur sporting event and a precursor to the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.

The image gives the appearance of an amusement park, with each city acting as its own attraction. Most play host to one or more sporting events, represented with illustrations of their respective venues. Official dates are provided by the legend in the lower right. Numerous caricatured athletes, politicians, administrators, performers, and coaches include Greg Louganis, Roberta Flack, Michael Jordan, Charlie Daniels Band, Jim Valvano, and LeRoy Walker.

Designed, produced, and copywritten in 1987 by Citigraph, Inc. of Raleigh, North Carolina. A nearly illegible artist’s signature (Frank D. Brad?) can be seen in the lower right.
