This appealing pictorial world map was published by Trans World Airlines around 1958 to promote the company’s global aviation routes in operation. It’s typical of other airline advertising maps in that simplified vignettes provide a generalized impression of the various foreign places accessible via the highlighted air routes.

Competitor’s lines are visually minimized, and the projection was selected to maximize the impression of TWA’s global coverage. Images of cultural landmarks, dangerous animals, and exotic plants can be seen throughout.

Details within the map also show other contemporary items of interest. The Direct Polar Route is emphasized and reflects how standard map projections inadequately describe distances through the air. Airline operation in Russia is almost totally absent (note the careful placement of the title cartouche, highlighting the heightened state of tension during the Cold War. Two views of the Lockheed Constellation, the mainstay of the TWA global fleet for over a decade, are also included.
