Description

This mid-century map highlights the routes in operation by Trans World Airlines across the domestic United States. The image reflects the often piecemeal nature of air travel prior to the long distances facilitated through jet propulsion.

The Lockheed Constellation, seen on either side of the sheet, was one of the last propeller driven planes that bridged the gap. Though it had a range of over 3,000 miles, it was much reduced with significant passenger or freight cargo.

This was also prior to widespread consolidation across the aviation industry, and a number of independent operators are listed in the lower right (though TWA owned at least a partial interest of many of them).

An inset map in the lower center shows the airline’s routes in operation (and connections) across the globe from San Francisco to Tokyo.
