Description

The gelatin silver print was issued as a wirephoto by the Associated Press to accompany an August 4th, 1964 about the race riots that summer. The captioned text reads;

“Map outlines areas in New York and New Jersey involved in racial violence in the past few weeks. In New York City rioting broke out in Harlem (A) on July 18. One Negro was killed. In Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant section (B), Negroes rioted and looted on July 20-22. From July 24-26, rioting in Rochester (C) brought about four deaths. Rioting in Jersey City (D) the past two nights was the fourth outbreak of violence in the northeast in two weeks.”

An unfortunately biased assessment of protests that began as a result of an off-duty police officer shooting a Black teenager, James Powell, in Harlem.
