Description
This somewhat discomfiting brochure was printed in Berlin in 1934 by the Reichsbahnzentrale fur den Deutschen Reiseverkehr [Reichsbahn Central Office for German Travel]. It was an issue (in English) to an American audience in anticipation of the upcoming 1936 Summer Olympics.
The introduction presents a stylized railway map and ‘American Speaks for Germany’, a series of accolades for the regime from U.S. individuals and companies (including the Chicago Tribune). This is followed by over three dozen pages of photographs and text that subtly incorporate Nazi ideologies about German culture, geography, tourism, transportation, etc. The booklet ends with a fold-out map of Germany’s railways by Walter Riemer. The inset of Europe presents the Polish Corridor and Alsace-Lorraine as distinctly separate, foreshadowing future political and military ambitions.

Condition Description: Folding map (size given), near fine, bound with staples to a 40 pp. brochure (folded once), with original illustrated wraps. One page loose from the somewhat rusty staples and a few closed tears, confined to the margins. A bit of light wear, creasing, and faint toning, consistent with age and use, but overall in very good condition.
