Description

“Trap the Jap puzzle typifies the strategy that is being pursued by the United Nations to defeat the Japs in the Pacific War area…viz., to attack and recapture the strategic naval and military bases in that area of operations and finally conquer and occupy Tokyo.” – Instructions.

This discomfiting board game was issued in 1945 by Modern Novelties, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio. The player maneuvers eight colored marbles into defensive positions surrounding Japan at Attu, Foochow, Manila, Singapore, Guam, etc. Once the red marble (sadly lacking) lands in Tokyo, the enemy is ‘trapped’ and the game is won.

An interesting reduction of the Allied strategic objectives in the Pacific, with a vibrant scene illustrating the destruction already endured by the city. The piece is an excellent example of the widespread normalization of anti-Japanese sentiment during the war, extending even to children’s games.
