Description
This incredible collection of maps, views, and descriptive text of Connecticut was published in Boston by D.H. Hurd & Company in 1893. Compiled from government surveys, county records, and personal investigations, the atlas provides an insightful look into The Constitution State near the end of the 19th century.
It was issued on a subscription basis in order to defray the significant upfront costs of publication. Residents and businesses across the state could pay to have custom portraits, advertisements, or views of homes, commercial buildings, and even prized farm animals included in the robust volume. The atlas contains about fifteen pages that list these various patrons, ranging from private citizens to churches, public institutions, and important manufacturers. Other contents across the 224 pages include;
- Detailed photolithographic views of important buildings across the state; including the state capitol, churches, major manufacturers, and the Y.M.C.A.
- Thematic state maps including Congressional and Senatorial districts
- Four U.S. Coast Survey maps of the Connecticut coastline from New York to Westerly
- Two-part maps of each county
- Dozens of plans of cities and villages, including three-part plans of New Haven and Hartford
- 15 pages of illustrations covering “Leading Citizens who have Aided in the Publication”
- Descriptive text outlining information on systems for banking, education, insurance, transportation, and postal service
