This fun map highlighting the ‘automobility’ of Alabama was issued in 1962 by the state’s Highway Department. One side of the sheet presents a pictorial Tourist Guide by Phil Kessel, were colorful vignettes identify over fifty points of interest across the Yellowhammer State. The verso offers a more straightforward road map of Alabama, with a mileage table and several insets showing major thoroughfares through urban areas. At the time, the entire country was undergoing massive road building projects as part of the 1956 Interstate Highway System.
