Description

This commemorative report was originally published as part of the American Forces in Actions Series by the Military Intelligence Division of the U.S. War Department in late 1943. According to the foreword written by George C. Marshall,

“AMERICAN FORCES IN ACTION is a series prepared by the War Department especially for the information of wounded men. It will show these soldiers, who have served their country so well, the part they and their comrades played in achievements who do honor to the record of the United States Army.”

This example, marked “FOR USE OF MILITARY PERSONNEL ONLY”, is the first of the series, and covers the final drive of the II Corps in the Tunisia Campaign of North Africa. (Note the narrative picks up after the disastrous losses at the Battle of Sidi Bou Zid and the Battle of the Kasserine Pass).

Maps, photographs, and illustrations supplement text that summarizes the major elements of the drive to Bizerte. The loss of that port city, plus Tunis, led to the widespread surrender of nearly 250,000 members of the German Afrika Korps.
