Description

This massive map is an incredible visualization of the complex and vast natural forces at work across and below Earth’s surface. The image identifies the general locations of over 140,000 earthquakes and nearly 1,500 volcanoes (active and dormant). Bold red strokes (dashed where unknown) outline the diverging lithospheric plates, with arrows showing their respective directions.

The accompanying text offers an easy-to-understand explanation of plate tectonics and their relationship to these seismic events around the globe. Information about the preparation of the map and a selected bibliography is also provided.

Designed as a cooperative effort between scientists from the U.S.G.S. and the Smithsonian Institution. Published in 1989 to commemorate the 28th International Geological Congress, held in Washington, D.C.
