Description

The Seven Years’ War was one of several continental upheavals in which the balance of power in Europe was at stake. Colonial rivalries between France and Britain, coupled with unresolved issues from the War of Austrian Succession, led to a re-alignment of traditional alliances that saw the ascendant military power of Prussia join forces with Great Britain against France, Russia, and the Hapsburg Empire.

This map, issued in France about 20 years after the conflict, shows the theater of battle and the locations of numerous significant conflicts. Parallel colored boxes identify these battle sites, while a legend in the upper left identifies those nations associated with each color and pattern. Landmass is colored by the occupying force, with Prussia (yellow) and Austria (grey) possessing the largest territory.
