Description

To an American audience, the “stovepipe” configuration of an independent Texas and the large territory labeled as Nueva California may be the most striking elements of this map. But these are simply two geographic circumstances shown by this straightforward depiction of the world in 1841. Europeans might notice the encroachment of the Turkish and Russian empires within their continental domain (outlined in red), while Africans are possibly reminded of the strong colonial influences developing from the coastline inland.

Outline color, neatly printed text and fine engraving makes this a practical and legible map, which is typical from the SDUK. The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge was an organization that operated between 1826 and 1848 which focused on the publication and distribution of inexpensive learning material for the general public. It was thought that the ability to self-educate in the lower and middle classes would contribute to public order and advance the high minded ideals of Western science and civilization.
