Description

This funky map of the Western Hemisphere was published in the early 1970s to highlight the breadth of important roles played by the United States Coast Guard around the globe. Critical tasks like icebreaking, pollution control, navigational aid, law enforcement, fishery conservation, and port safety are identified by the symbols outlined in the legend (lower right).

Inset maps show the branch’s presence in Europe and Australia; with a planned OMEGA station noted in the latter, helping to date the map to around 1973. The image is enhanced with lively artwork, indicative of the era, with an eye-catching Sun and Moon reflecting the Coast Guard’s motto – Semper Paratus (Always Ready).
