Description

This interesting map presents the historic primary transportation routes across the Middle East, including parts of modern-day Iran, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia. Courier, Pilgrim, and Other Routes are noted according to the legend in the lower center. The Great Desert Route linking Aleppo to Basra is among the oldest overland routes connecting Europe to Asia.

The map was created by Christina Phelps Grant and published in 1937 as part of her influential volume, The Syrian Desert. Caravans,Travel and Exploration.
