Description

Summer trips to escape the oppressive city heat are not new ideas to today’s New Yorkers, Bostonians, or Philadelphians. The cool breezes, picturesque scenery and clear waters of the northeast have long drawn tourists to the region, and it was no different the summer of 1877, when this tourism booklet was published for the Central Vermont Railroad.

The line was chartered in 1843 and over the next several decades would quickly expand to serve several U.S. states and Canada. A critical component of every railroad’s bottom line was the tourism dollar, and it was with that in mind that this guidebook was designed and distributed free of charge to stations throughout the Vermont Central system.

Within its covers can be found detailed information on over 250 different excursions that can be taken on the railroad’s various connecting routes, along with contemporary advertisements, engravings of prominent regional attractions, and two fold out maps.
