Description

“Considerable progress has been made in Russia during a half century of Communist rule…Nevertheless, Russia still lags far behind the United States.”

This informational poster map was created and published in Washington, D.C. in 1966 by the Civic Education Service as part of its Headline-Focus Wall Map series. A simple pictorial map of the Soviet Union shows the bright red of Communism stretching from the Baltic to the Sea of Japan.

Vignettes highlight local industries and points of contemporary interest, such as the launch site at Baykonur and an operation to drill through the Earth’s crust at Astrakhan. Descriptive text in the lower right is organized into Land and People, Economy Undergoing Change, Political System and Foreign Affairs, and Flame of Freedom Flickers.
