Description
“This short account of the Soviet-Finnish War has been written for use in the instruction of cadets at the United States Military Academy…Since many of the documents consulted are classed as “confidential”, it is necessary that this pamphlet be so designated.” – Preface.
This is a relatively straightforward U.S. military assessment of the 1940 Winter War – a bloody 105-day conflict which saw Finland initially repel a Soviet invasion using ingenious guerrilla tactics, local terrain, and frigid weather to their significant advantage. Historical background, a summary of major engagements, and an outline of the peace terms are all included. Three fold-out maps show 1. Terrain and Communications, 2. Troop Distribution Prior to Opening of Hostilities, and 3. Two Plans of the Finnish Defensive Lines (in December and March).
