Description
This lively view of Chicago’s Michigan Avenue was based on a drawing by Frederic Schell and Charles Graham and published in an 1884 issue of Harper’s Weekly. It shows a parade of Republican supporters marching towards Exposition Hall, where delegates would eventually nominate James G. Blaine as the Republican candidate for the upcoming presidential election. (He would ultimately lose to Grover Cleveland).
Mounted police keep guard near a brass marching band. Well-dressed onlookers peer down the street from the lawns of lavish townhomes, while a glimpse of Grant Park and Lake Michigan can be seen on the right.
