Description

This compilation of contemporary scholarship on the Holy Land and the city of Jerusalem reflects a tremendous 19th-century interest in Biblical archaeology. Charles Warren, Count de Vogue, Reverend Grenville Chester, and Charles William Wilson (among others) offer a diverse array of contributions on behalf of the Committee of the Palestine Exploration Fund. The immense project was underwritten by Baroness Burdett-Coutts, one of the wealthiest women in England.

Notable engravings include sketches of Jerusalem’s walls, topographic maps of Mount Moriah and the Valley of Jordan, diagrams of tombs, and a survey of the Sea of Galilee. Edited by Walter Morrison and published in London in 1871 by Richard Bentley and Sons. Printed by William Clowes and Sons.
