Description

William Goldman’s “The Princess Bride,” first published in 1973, is a fantasy romance novel presented as an “abridgment” of a longer, fictional work by “S. Morgenstern.” The story follows the classic fairy tale adventure of Buttercup and Westley, their enduring love, and their encounters with memorable characters like Inigo Montoya and Fezzik. Though initially modest in sales, the book gained enduring popularity, especially after Rob Reiner’s 1987 film adaptation, which turned it into a beloved cult classic.

This small but punchy, pictorial map was illustrated by Lowell Hess and published by Ballantine Books in 1987 to accompany the release of the Princess Bride movie. The lands of Guilder and Florin are depicted, with landmarks and decorative elements skillfully illustrated in a style that harkens back to medieval England. The coat of arms of the noble Humperdinck family is proudly depicted in the lower center.
