Description
This scarce leaflet was published in early 1945 for mass distribution to Allied troops participating in the gradual advance northward through Italy. After breaking through the Gustav Line and capturing Rome, the Allies faced yet another major obstacle in the form of the Po River.
One side of the sheet shows an inviting stylized pictorial map of the valley, with vignettes showing abundant livestock, wine, and beautiful women. The welcoming attitude contrasts sharply with the interior, which presents a harsh black-and-white scene featuring Death personified wading through the river, destroyed bridges, and assault boats littering the water.
An interesting example of the psychological warfare utilized by German forces in an effort to demoralize and destabilize Allied troops.
