Description
“Showing the surfacing of roads, mileage between cities and insert maps of the larger cities showing streets used in leaving and other information that you will find of value. It also has a classified list of reliable hotels and business houses who cater to the motorist.” – Front cover.
This somewhat Spartan road map covers the route of the iconic Pacific Highway between Vancouver and the Bay Area. A surprising amount of information is contained within the image; including road surfaces (paved, macadam, gravel, and dirt), distances between points, descriptions of local topography (steep climbs could be difficult for early automobiles), and prominent nearby road connections (described as tributaries). Small insets show the major intersections for various cities along the way, including Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Eugene, Roseburg, Redding, Sacramento, and San Francisco. Nearby tourist destinations like Crater Lake, Mt. Rainier National Park, and the Olympic Highway are also noted.
The map was designed by Clarence Gray and published by the Auto Road Map Company of Portland. Sponsored by local mechanic Fred Dundee, an advertisement for whom can be seen on the map and the back cover – The Largest and Best Equipped Repair Plant on the Pacific Coast.
