Description
In the early 1970s, Anheuser-Busch embarked on the development of the Busch Gardens theme park as part of their broader investment strategy in the Williamsburg, VA region. This comprehensive investment plan also encompassed the establishment of a brewery, the creation of the Kingsmill Resort, and the development of residential and office properties.
Busch Gardens: The Old Country, as it was then known, first welcomed visitors in 1975. The theme of ‘old world’ Europe was directly related to nearby Colonial Williamsburg and is clearly evident on this souvenir bird’s eye view and guide map, issued for the opening season. Six areas – New France, Aquitaine, Hastings, Rhinefeld, Heatherdowns, and Branbury Cross – are spread across the approximately 250-acre site.
Nearly 70 different attractions, games, shops, restaurants, and guest amenities are labeled and illustrated in a quaint style. Decorative elements like windheads, compass roses (non-functioning), sailing ships, and armored knights further reinforce the subject matter.
