Description

This tongue-in-cheek print shows a fictional history of the American Communist Party in the form of a route map of the Communist Party Line Railroad. Starting in 1919 (upper left) the railroad follows its route of time into the late 1930s, with various obstacles, organizational updates, and historic events illustrated in a comic fashion.

The foreground shows a junction with the Berlin Express, reflecting the coinciding of Communism and Fascism into one unified track. The accompanying text provides further warning – ‘the fifth column of Stalin, low on prestige and short on success, still has 100,000 adherents burning to overthrow this capitalist democracy.”

Drawn by Albert Hirschfeld and published in a 1940 issue of Fortune Magazine.
