The Official State Atlas of Nebraska

Scarce and important atlas of Nebraska published in Philadelphia by Everts & Kirk.

According to the preface, this impressive publication took a team of surveyors, cartographers and printers almost two years to complete. Their intensive labor paid great dividends, as the resulting atlas is likely the most complete and detailed work on Nebraska produced during the 19th century.

Over 150 maps provide a wealth of information on the townships and counties across the state; including transportation routes, political organization and the locations of important buildings like churches, schools, cemeteries and post offices. Multi-sheet city plans are provided for Lincoln and Omaha. Accompanying each map is extensive text outlining the history, climate and population.

Many 19th century atlases were published on a subscription basis in order to defray up front costs, which were often significant. In return, a publisher would include the name of the subscriber and, for a fee, an engraved portrait or view of the patron’s property. This publication includes numerous such examples, and lists of “names of leading businessmen and professional men…who have aided in the publication of the Official State Atlas of Nebraska” offer an interesting insight into the social composition of high society.
