This interesting engraved view shows the British fortifications along the southern coast of Spain at Gibraltar. The Union Jack can be seen fluttering proudly over the vitally strategic chokepoint between the Atlantic and Mediterranean, in British hands since 1704 (and remains so today). Numerous walls and redoubts are overshadowed by the high peaks, making sieges by land or by sea incredibly difficult to maintain.
