Description

This cartographic analysis of the industrial production of the southern states was published in a 1944 issue of Fortune Magazine. Various centers of industry are illustrated across the map and outlined in the key in the upper left. Tables of statistics detail the demographics of the eleven states comprising the “Solid South” using the 1940 census data.

Interesting commentary along the bottom of the page provides a bit of historical and political background, with foreshadowing for the 1944 presidential election. (Note – all eleven states voted for Roosevelt)
