Description

This sweeping panorama covers an approximately 30-mile swathe of the Niagara River between Buffalo and Lewiston, New York. The image is oriented with east at the top of the page so as to maximize the perspective afforded to the route of the Niagara Gorge Railroad. The trolley line is shown snaking around either side of the famous falls and along the water level of the gorge, stopping by numerous labeled points of interest, scenic vistas, and industrial marvels along its way.

The route was initially established in 1895 and remained in operation until a landslide destroyed parts of the line in 1935. Today, much of it has been repurposed into the popular Niagara Gorge hiking trail. The illustration was originally drawn by Hiram Harold Green, though he is uncredited on this particular example. Published in Buffalo by the Gies Company in 1916.
