Description
Wealthy residents in the area that would eventually become Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood helped to finance a series of improvements along the lakeshore in the 1880s and 1890s. These included a lake wall and scenic boardwalk that would eventually develop into the famous Lake Shore Drive.
This group of views captures both the construction and finished product. The upper image shows the old pilings and debris – quite unsightly, with Potter Palmer’s famous turreted mansion in the background. The lower scene shows Victorian-era Chicagoans enjoying the improvements as curls of smoke rise from the skyline in the background.
