Description
The incredible promotional brochure was published in 1929 by Marken & Bielfield, Inc. of Frederick, Maryland to advertise the luxurious accommodations available at the Summit Hotel and Golf Club, near Uniontown, Pennsylvania. The popular resort, still in operation today, opened in 1907, though its origins as a stopover along the first National Road date back to the early 19th century.
The conveniently accessible location is highlighted on the route map that shows the now National Highway (U.S. Route 40) between Baltimore and Kansas City. An elevation profile immediately below shows the changes in height along the way, with the Summit Hotel pinpointed at 924.7 ft above sea level.
An inset in the upper left corner provides directions to the lodging, while accompanying text and photographs on the bottom and verso highlight its amenities, recreational opportunities, and affordable rates. A diagram of the 9-hole golf course, ‘the highest, coolest, and sportiest in Pennsylvania’, can also be seen on the verso.
