Description
This pair of amusing woodcut prints were based on creative sketches by the talented Linley Sambourne and originally published in the 1893 Christmas Number of Punch or the London Charivari. These particular examples were issued the following year in a commemorative annual anthology.
The pages present updated interpretations of six Mother Goose nursery rhymes, with the moral themes shifting to contemporary social and political issues. For example, Jack and Jill are now a couple far apart in age, tumbling down the hill on their way to a marriage of convenience. A ‘black sheep’ representing Knavish Speculation sits atop much more than three bags full of wool!
