Description

This wood engraving was issued in the September 9, 1865 issue of Harper’s Weekly. Various vignettes, based on artists’ sketches, show the range of activities in which the Metropolitan Police were engaged across New York City. Escorting ladies across hectic streets, catching thieves in the act during the dead of night, and quelling riots are just a few examples of such bravery.

Portraits of the police brass and an illustration showcasing the latest technology – the telegraph – can be seen around the edges.
