The Lake Pend Oreille Country

This charming map of Lake Pend O’Reille was issued by the Sandpoint, Oregon Chamber of Commerce around 1969. Local transportation routes are highlighted in red, while camp grounds, boat ramps, and Indian writings are identified according to the accompanying legend. Humorous illustrations highlighting leisure activities and geographic landmarks are scattered throughout.

While the majority of the map provides an upbeat theme, a red swathe across the top notes the path of the tragic 1967 Sundance Fire, in which two firefighters perished. A prescient reminder in the upper right encourages the audience to put out their fires (though the Sundance Fire was caused by a lightning strike). The verso includes a basic street plan of Sandpoint, with the route to Schweitzer Ski Bowl highlighted in red.
