Description

This double-sided transportation map was published circa 1920 by A.G. Hagstrom Company of New York on behalf of the John Wanamaker Department Store. The legendary outlet got its start in Philadelphia shortly after the Civil War and was near its height at the time of the map’s distribution. John Wanamaker himself would pass away in 1922.

Three different images present the automobile roads, railways, and transit networks of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and greater New York City. Lines are shown according to the legend within each inset, and numerous manuscript annotations note a route through the city, mark various train stations, and label landmarks like Coney Island and Yankee Stadium.

The verso presents a map of the automobile routes across New York state and New Jersey. In addition to locating the John Wanamaker store “in the heart of the Metropolitan District”, various shipping depots across the region are noted.
