Description

“From eight adventurous young Jewish immigrants in 1850, the Jewish population of Los Angeles has grown to more than 500,000 in 1980.” – Text, back page.

This uncommon pamphlet was distributed in 1981 by the Southern California Jewish Historical Society in cooperation with the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles. Text by Reva Clar provides a chronological overview of Jewish life in Los Angeles from the 1840s through the 1980s, documenting the growth of the community and its religious, cultural, and civic institutions.

A colorful centerfold map, illustrated by Betty Kasner, identifies more than fifty sites associated with Jewish history across the region, including community organizations, schools, cemeteries, synagogues, orphanages, and other institutions. Former locations are marked with small black dots, while historical markers are indicated by white boxes.
