Description

Situated off the western English coast, in the Irish Sea, lies the fictional Island of Sodor. It is the home of the beloved character, Thomas the Tank Engine, created by Wilbert Audrey and first introduced in the Railway Series in 1945. The first railway map of Sodor appeared in 1949, with numerous subsequent editions updating the geography according to the adventures of Thomas and his friends.

This colorful topographic map was illustrated by Peter Edwards and published in London by Kaye & Ward Ltd. in 1971. Lacking many adornments, it almost appears to have been intended for an adult audience! The various railway lines are identified according to the legend in the lower right. Numerous locations of interest are labeled and captioned, including Crovan’s Gate, Gordon’s Hill, Tidmouth, and Kirk Ronan. The characters associated with each branch can be found on the back cover (lower left).
