Description

“This work is a mere Riddle, it consisting only of some Lines; that according to the variety of their Situation and Dispositions, form Figures which, by their different Combinations, signify different things.” – Text.

This unusual printed leaf comes from an unknown 18th-century English publication. The text describes the I Ching, or Book of Changes, an ancient Chinese divination text and a foundational work of Chinese philosophy.

A diagram outlines further, as the first two principles of Yin and Yang divide into eight figures that correlate to points of the compass. These make sixty-four possible outcomes, the results of which are divined through the pattern of tossed coins or stalks of grass.
