Description
The Huntingdon and Broad Top Mountain Railroad was first opened in 1853 as a way to access the coal-rich region of Broad Top Mountain, in south central Pennsylvania. Known for its high quality semi-bituminous coal since colonial times; prior to the railroad, the only way to extract the ore was via barge or horse drawn cart.
The railroad grew throughout the 19th century, adding passenger service and numerous branches to new coal fields. This map shows the H&BTM network shortly after its zenith, using simple lines and text to identify each route and stop. It folds into its original cardboard covers, to which are attached two 4 page timetables for the 1931 spring and fall seasons.
