Description

This beautiful group of maps was illustrated by the talented Ruth Taylor White and originally published in 1941 by the Hawaii Tourist Bureau. Though tourism across the islands would skyrocket in the postwar years, the arrival of air service to the island in 1936 inaugurated a new era of leisure travel to the remote Pacific archipelago. Based on text on one of the panels, this example was issued in 1942 by Hawaii Service, shortly after the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor and American entry into the war.

“This colored series of cartographs is especially arranged for and dedicated with smiles and flowers to the many welcome newcomers in Hawaii – nurses, sailors and soldiers, marines, war-workers and others who are ‘all out’ for a complete victory.”

Five individual maps are attached as part of the ‘Aloha Greeting Folder’ – one for the territory and the islands of Maui, Oahu, Hawaii, and Kauai. Roads and trails are shown on each, with charming vignettes highlighting local culture, natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and more.
