Description

To celebrate the 60th year of Queen Victoria’s reign (as well as having recently obtained the title as the longest-serving British monarch), a Grand Fleet Review was ordered for the British Navy near Spithead in 1897. Artist William Lionel Wyllie was on hand to commemorate the event with a painting, and it was used as the basis for this engraving that was published the same year in London’s The Graphic.

Smoke from the steam engines can be seen mingling with cannon discharge, as the fleet is depicted offering a salute to the royal yacht, which had just joined their ranks. Unfortunately the queen was to frail to attend in person, so the review was presided over by the Prince of Wales and later King Edward VII.
