Description
This wood engraved view was published in the September 15, 1855 edition of The Illustrated London News. It shows the French encampment at the port of Kamiesch, near Sevastopol, during the Crimean War.
Several amenities such as a café and bakery are shown, while the two well-dressed ladies in front of the latter are no doubt the wives of officers. Just a few days before the image was published, Russian forces surrendered the city of Sevastopol to the Allied coalition of Britain, France, and the Ottoman Empire.
