Description
This sketched view shows the successful attempt of the 49th Engineer Combat Battalion to bridge the Salle River in Germany in early May of 1945. A mix of temporary scaffolding, steel frames, and railroad ties appear to be employed in its construction – an ingenious use of resources, to be sure.
Text in the lower right explains that the unit had the honor of building the first bridge during the invasion of Europe at Carentan. Elements of the 49th E.C.B. were in the D-Day invasion as well. A small cross on the bank of the river likely represents the unit’s casualties in an abstract sense, while several of its officers are illustrated in the lower left.
