Description
This beautifully engraved print was based off George Trumball’s famous painting, “George Washington before the Battle of Trenton.” It shows the Father of Our Country in a stoic pose, surveying the battlefield while an excited horse has to be calmed by an attendant in the background.
According to the Mt. Vernon museum, the firm of Illman & Sons originally engraved and published the print in 1856 “in an effort to remind voters of civic duty and patriotic sacrifice on the occasion of a presidential election.” This particular example, slightly modified, was published as a New Year’s gift to the subscribers of the Philadelphia Ledger.
